Le design comme invention

Meubles, mode, agroalimentaire, transports.

Performance by Fabien Breuvart on the evening of the Paris Phato 09 private showing… or photographic “raw art” !

Placed between rue Charlot (35/37) and the marché des Enfants Rouges, Fabien Breuvart is a “neighborhood” photographer who decided to display photographs of simple and anonymous people to the seasoned Paris collectors. At Paris Photo. After collecting thousands of vintage pictures as well as family photos which at times dated from as early as the beginning of the 20th century, he offered them the fair visitors, for free...

New York Sales: Sotheby's 1 – Christie’s 0.5

Taking place one day after that of its main rival, Christie's, the modern art and impressionist sale at Sotheby's on November 4, 2009, when the final hammer fell, took the victory. It must be noted that Sotheby's came out strong: from the first lot, a poster by Dali, was sold for three times its estimated value. Telephones ringing all over the room set the tone for the auction. Chinese buyers were represented in vast numbers on-line, especially when the Picasso from 1947 came up, the ‘Woman in a hat”, sold for $8.1 million, or $2.1 million more than its high-end estimated value. China may make hat prices more affordable but they certainly do nothing of the sort in the art market!

Fiac 2009 : finally, an international commercial exposition in Paris

In the middle of the economic doldrums, Fiac’s 36th edition can be counted is a veritable commercial and artistic success. The icing on the cake for the Parisian organizers who stood for a long time in the shadow of Frieze, was that their London-based rival was hit hard by the crisis…Certain international galleries saved their best pieces for the Parisian commercial exhibition…It must be said that a stand in the Grand Palais is much more costly than one in Maastricht or Basel! For a gallery owner, sales are paramount...

The bubble having burst, Frieze seems to have lost its fizz

In its 7th year of existence, Frieze endured its first albeit numerous gallery issues especially since the Dollar lost so much of its value. Having a somewhat vacant space, the gallery organizers had to act and did so by creating a new section called “Frame,” set aside for galleries having been in existence less than 6 years each displaying a “one man show.” The most distinguished pieces from this year were the latest works from Anselm Kieffer and were exhibited privately at White Cube! Without the decorum afforded by the Grand Palais but with triptychs enough to take one’s breath away... Some crotchety French deemed that this latest edition held by Frieze was not worth the extra walk. Many galleries, however, were not of the same opinion...
