Matisse and Rodin: Freedom through color verses muscular mobility
The Rodin Museum has brilliantly juxtaposed the drawings and sculptures of Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) and Henri Matisse (1869-1954). The exposition, which lasts until February 28th, reveals that these two artists are not as different as one might think.

Clash of the Titans: Rodin-Matisse
In 1899, Matisse (1869-1954) acquired from Vollard the Buste d’Henri Rochefort, an original sculpture by Rodin (1840-1917) from which he quickly made two drawings. More than just introducing the work of two artists who met only once in 1900, and the subject of the current exposition at the Musee Rodin in Paris (from October 23rd, 2009-28 February 28th, 2010), the acquisition raises the delicate question concerning original sculpted works (as opposed to reproductions) and their prices. In other words, how to decipher auction catalogs and buy a Rodin sculpture here and a Matisse sculpture there?

Originality Multiplied
Are all of Rodin’s bronzes legally original works of art? What about copy number 9 of The Kiss? Does it have the same legal value as copy number 1 or rather; is it a reproduction or a fake? According to the 2006 law concerning tax provisions, reproductions and Intellectual property code, certain works may be original while at the same time existing in multiple copies, within certain limits and under certain conditions.
